Platinum Sponsor: Perfect Potion

With values entrenched in environmental sustainability and conservation, our aim, since opening our doors in 1991 in Brisbane, has been to reconnect people with nature through aromatherapy. With a philosophy that harmonises social and environmental concerns, as well as various certifications to support our preparations, we have established a standard to which others can only aspire to. We also proudly attained 3-Star ecoBiz Partnership, an achievement that recognises our commitment to the environment through consistent sustainability practices.

We create and make all of our aromatherapy and skincare preparations in our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility (solar-powered, may we add) in Banyo, Queensland. This means we ensure our sustainably sourced ingredients and products remain of the highest integrity, and offer quality preparations that are palm oil-free, vegan, cruelty-free, certified natural, and in most cases, certified organic.

Our stores are a sanctuary for the senses. They provide a nurturing, relaxing space for our customers, the Green Goddess and God. The Green Goddess and God are socially and environmentally responsible individuals who embody positivity, thoughtfulness and empathy. They look for ways to enhance their health and find balance in their life, while living in harmony with nature.

In 2008, we opened our first store in Kyoto, Japan. Our decision to enter the Japanese market was an easy one after we contemplated our values and vision. The cultural values and ethics of Japan aligned perfectly with our own, as did the aesthetics of Japan’s natural world. Since opening our stores in Japan, we have adapted many Japanese concepts, which are reflected in our current collection, including our Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) and Sacred Space ranges.

Since 1987, we have offered workshops to assist people on their journey of discovery, providing a nurturing environment to explore ways to incorporate aromatherapy as part of their daily ritual, enhancing their overall wellbeing. We are excited to be rolling out online aromatherapy workshops, which have been designed based on many of Salvatore Battaglia’s internationally acclaimed aromatherapy books and textbooks, including The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy (1st, 2nd & 3rd Editions), Aromatree, and Aromatherapy and Chakras.

She now runs AromaHub Malta together with Lorraine Spiteri. AromaHub’s goal and mission is to be there for clients ‘Come rain or shine, In health and in sickness, come what may …. Every step of the way’

Speaking

A wise man once told me that rather than us choosing our jobs, our jobs usually choose us and as I look back on the past ten years of my life I can see the various events that happened that led me from being a holistic aromatherapist having a handful of clients, who I saw in a small treatment room in my house to specializing in complementary therapy use in cancer and palliative care and with people with life limiting illnesses. This led me to then work in an oncology hospital for seven years. Today I run my own business together with my childhood friend Lorraine.

During my presentation I will be highlighting and speaking about the connections built with other health care professionals throughout the years and the way that these professional relationships have enabled me to extend my practice beyond what I would have ever imagined. I will be talking about aromatherapy use with cancer patients during various stages of the cancer journey through projects set up with other health care professionals at the hospital to support patients through their experience from the moment of diagnosis onwards.

We will be walking with some of my patients through case studies that I will be presenting and we will see how aromatics, love and care made a difference in their experience.

We will also be seeing how these same connections and the hospital experience are shaping the way we work at our medi-spa and how even when our external circumstances change, we can adapt ourselves to still reach our goals.

These will include:

  • Deep Shelter Project – A series of workshops for patients to help them narrate their experience through various art modalities
  • Aromatic Hearts Project – A project with the Psychologist in residence at the hospital to help extend treatment outside the therapy room through the use of aromatics
  • Feel Good Friday – AromaHub’s Complementary therapy project for people going through cancer
  • Share the Love – ArormaHub’s ‘pay it forward’ concept that gives us the possibility to provide treatments for people who cannot afford to pay.
  • Peripheral neuropathy and mindfulness project with Occupational Therapy Department
  • TRaC classes at Hospital – Survivorship self-care classes with focal nurses
  • Gozo Project – Offering services at Malta’s sister island hospital

Alana Gall

Bio

Alana is a Pakana (Tasmanian Aboriginal) woman from the north east coast of lutruwita (Tasmania), and more recently, the Bass Strait Islands of Cape Barren and Flinders Island. Alana is passionate about First peoples globally, specifically holistic health and wellbeing. She believes that the wellbeing and identity of First peoples is strongly centred around strong connections to land, culture, spirituality and each other.

She has over eleven years’ experience in research, research translation, community engagement, health education and clinical consultation. She has a background in Nutritional Medicine and completed a Master by Research with a focus on Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine use by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer patients and, more specifically, the disclosure of this use to their cancer healthcare professionals, and completed her PhD titled “Exploring Wellbeing from Indigenous Perspectives”. Her work focussed primarily on wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but also included a focus on the domains of wellbeing for Indigenous peoples in Canada, Aotearoa (New Zealand) and the United States. Alana’s work is grounded in decolonising research approaches, including Indigenist research methods with a strengths-based focus.

Alana is currently a Maurice Blackmore Research Fellow, in the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine, at Southern Cross University. She is developing a research program that will centre around First Nations Australians traditional medicines and healing practices, aiming to protect and preserve these medicines for future generations, and improve accessibility for all First Nations communities across Australia. In her previous research, Alana found that First Nations peoples tended to use other traditional and complementary medicines when they were not able to access their own, to meet their holistic health and wellbeing needs. Advocating for the respectful inclusion of all these medicines in the Australian health sector, is an important part of addressing the overarching goals of her research program. Indeed, these lands we all live, work and thrive on are, and always will be, First Nations Australians land. The work that NCNM are facilitating by embedding Alana’s research program positions them as allies within this space and shows respect for the Traditional Owners of these lands.

Speaking

Title:

Primum Non Nocere – acknowledgement of Australian First Nations traditional medicines as a minimum standard

General overview:

As holistic healers we adhere to tenets of practice that centre the patient and consider all aspects of their mind, body, spirit and lives. A core tenet, Primum Non Nocere, translated to ‘first do no harm’ is arguably one of the most important. However, when considering Australian First Nations peoples, the original owners and traditional custodians of this country now called Australia, are we considering whether the way in which we practice is causing them harm? First Nations peoples have oral traditions, meaning their knowledges have not been recorded using written methods. Oral forms of knowledge and knowledge transfer are not acknowledged or valued by our Western system of law in Australia, which has led to the non-existent protection of Indigenous knowledges. This opens up avenues for biopiracy and other forms of harm to First Nations peoples. As the custodians of this country for over 60,000 years, not a single plant would even be here for researchers and industry to use and experiment on if we had not protected, nurtured, and ensured their survival until today. Acknowledgement of this is the bare minimum.

Carol Rose

Bio

In patients with life-limiting illness, where the aim of palliation is to optimise their quality-of-life, the challenge arises among healthcare professionals with being able to see the opportunities for healing at a spiritual level, even though a biological cure is no longer possible. It is within these realms of spiritual and emotional care that aromatherapy can arguably make its greatest difference.

Clinical aromatherapy reframes symptom management in this patient group to allow for greater emotional, social and spiritual expression. The aim being to redress the balance of conventional medical approaches which tend to focus on the physical nature of symptoms and pharmacological management. Such approaches are dependent upon a thorough understanding of the patient’s symptom experience and their priorities of concern. Tailoring interventions to meet the individual’s particular issues, means that patients no longer receive a ‘blanket-approach’ to care but an intervention which considers their individual strengths and specific emotional, spiritual, physical and social capacities. Collectively, these serve to optimise a feeling of well-being. This requires a cohesive interplay between holistic and clinical aromatherapy principles.

This presentation will consider the ways in which we can seamlessly integrate clinical aromatherapy approaches alongside conventional medicine in the palliative care setting.

Speaking

Allergies are said to be on the increase and the reason some suffer is not entirely understood. Often the solution is not as easy as the removal of the offending agent and therefore millions living with allergies often need to reach for remedies to tackle the symptoms and reactions.

This presentation will explore the use of aromatherapy in the treatment of the symptoms of a range of common allergies to help you improve the wellbeing of your clients, friends, family or even yourself! As well as looking chemically at the oils, the most effective application methods will also be explored.

There is an increasing interest in complementary modalities, but there is still much work to be done. Although many health care professionals, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, and especially patients and their loved ones are positive about these development, there is a need for consistency in protocols and back up of evidence based guidelines and practice. Madeleine shares her learning points and hopes to inspire you with the initiatives she has helped to develop in the last 20 years.
